The Maitighar Effect: Nepal's Hyde Park erupts in anti-government protest

Kathmandu: For a few days, #Nepal's very own #Hyde Park, the #Maitighar Mandala, has been the major hotspot of the protest against the #Guthi Bill, the nearly two-third KP Oli government's bid to make changes in Guthi (cultural-religious trusts) administration.  The Bill has not gone well with large sections of the public, including people of the Kathmandu Valley, who largely see it as part of the design to hand over to cadres of the present ruling party both public and private trusts like the Swargadwari  Guthi (Pyuthan) with huge landholdings, which ensure continuity of ages-old cultures and traditions, numerous jatras  and preservation of both tangible and intangible heritages, by making resources available.  Culture experts fear that changes in the traditional Guthi system will put Nepal's UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites, including those in the Kathmandu Valley ,  in peril. Kathmandu in full bloom beckons visitors

Jacaranda bloom at Ghantaghar-Tri-Chandra College, Kathmandu Kathmandu is for all seasons.  Even when many parts of the world find it hard to cope with the sweltering summer, Nepal's maximum city remains relatively calm, cool and tranquil with maximum temperatures hovering at around  early 30's! Still, if you find Kathmandu a bit too hot, you can seek refuge in cooler climes of the environs.  Dhulikel beckons with her lush green woods, spectacular views of the Himalayas and so does the picturesque Balthali with its cool climes and sparkling waters.
